Material choices are where a home is either made or quietly let down. The difference rarely shows on day one. It shows in year three, when one surface still looks right and another needs replacing.
Stone: choose by finish, not just colour
Calacatta, statuario, Taj Mahal, pink onyx: the names matter less than the finish. A polished slab reflects light and shows every smudge. A honed finish softens the surface and forgives daily use. A leathered finish adds texture and hides watermarks almost entirely.
For kitchens and bathrooms in a family home, honed almost always outperforms polished. We choose stone the way we plan lighting: for how the room is actually used, not how it photographs.
Timber: solid where it shows, engineered where it doesn’t
In the UAE climate, engineered timber flooring with a thick solid wear layer outperforms full solid timber. It stays more stable through the heat and air-conditioning, and looks identical once finished.
For joinery, we use solid oak or walnut on door fronts and visible surfaces, with engineered cores behind. You get the look and feel of solid timber, with the longevity of considered engineering.
Joinery: the invisible luxury
A kitchen or wardrobe is only as good as its hinges, runners and edges. We treat quality hardware, such as Blum, Hettich or equivalent, as the baseline, not an upgrade, and design joinery so the seams disappear. The real luxury isn’t the finish. It’s the absence of any visible compromise.
Brass, bronze and the metals that age well
Polished chrome looks new and stays looking new. Unlacquered brass and bronze develop a patina that feels warm and lived-in, but only when the rest of the home supports them. We use them as accents rather than across whole rooms, so the patina reads as intentional, not accidental.
Renting, or not ready to renovate?
The same thinking applies to what you can take with you: a solid oak side table, a brass lamp, linen curtains or a travertine tray. Choose a few pieces that age well, and the rest of the room follows.
Chosen for how they age
Materials that last are chosen for the way they age, not the way they photograph. The specification behind a calm, considered home is rarely glamorous. It’s a series of small, deliberate choices that add up to something you won’t need to replace.
